Why did we build this site?

Because the oceans are vital to our lives and livelihood!

Did you know that the oceans sustain one out of every six American jobs now? *

*From Vice President Al Gore opening address to the National Ocean Conference June 11, 1998

Did you know that 20% of our economy is based on ocean related activities?

Ocean careers support:

  • National security/defense
  • Transportation and commerce
  • Energy and exploration activities
  • Telecommunications
  • Recreation and tourism
  • Fisheries and aquaculture
  • Search and recovery operations
  • Nautical/underwater archeology
  • Government assessment and regulation
  • Scientific/medical research
  • Education and the arts
  • …And much more

 However there is a problem.

  • Current trends in research and industry are not well reflected in many educational programs.
  • Clear links are missing between education programs, marine careers, and the marine economy.
  • There is a lack of readily available information about careers in non-academic marine science and technology positions.
  • Many ocean occupations are not classified by the Department of Labor and therefore are hidden from educators and students.

The solution – www.OceanCareers.com
